Children missing out on bedtime stories

The National Library published (on 18 March 2014) a blog titled 'Children missing out on bedtime stories', available here. Extracts follow:

When a Northland school surveyed parents they found that only 5 percent were reading to children at bedtime. On the other side of the world, a 2010 UK survey of primary school teachers found as many as half of them were teaching children who had never been read a bedtime story.
Imagine 20,000 parents/whānau engaged in reading workshops with teachers throughout New Zealand, to provide literacy support at home for their children! This is the vision for the Ministry of Education’s Reading Together® Project for 2012-2015. The results of this initiative to date have shown that student achievement has accelerated through parents and children reading together at home.
